Nestled discreetly off a side street in downtown Tacoma, Devil's Reef is an authentic tiki bar that captures the mystique and vibrancy of the South Pacific with a modern edge. From the moment you find the unassuming ship’s well marking its entrance, you know you're stepping into a rare, captivating hideaway where the ambiance is dark, cozy, and saturated with nautical charm.
Devil’s Reef is much more than your average bar — it’s a sanctuary for tiki aficionados and cocktail lovers who crave imaginative libations crafted with precision and care. The drink menu is impressively robust, boasting a dazzling array of specialty cocktails and rum-focused concoctions that balance powerful, tasteful punches with deep complexity. Standouts like the Obed's Grog, Requiem For A Doomed Stare, and the playful yet potent Voodoo Summoning Captain Obed's Grog are celebrated by patrons seeking that authentic tiki experience without a hint of pre-mixed sweetness. If the thought of sipping on expertly mixed Mai Tais, Pain Killers, or Daiquiris while soaking in the ambiance excites you, Devil's Reef delivers on every level.
Beyond the libations, the food menu enhances the overall escape with offerings such as the BLT Sandwich, Spam Musubi, Pulled Pork Sliders, and inventive rice bowls like the Black Sails Rice Bowl and Rum Fire Jerk Chicken Rice Bowl. These dishes blend comfort with bold flavors, perfect for pairing with your cocktail of choice. The spicy and smoky notes in the jerk chicken and the satisfying umami of the pulled pork sliders underscore the bar’s commitment to quality and creativity in every bite.
Customers rave about the bar’s intimate and fun atmosphere. Spencer E describes it as a “nice dark tiki bar” that feels like a hidden gem, perfect for those who appreciate a moody yet welcoming setting. Nancy Johnson highlights the cozy vibe and praises the inventive drink, “Gilman House Special,” as one of the best drinks she’s ever had. Meanwhile, Evan Langley sums it up beautifully, calling Devil’s Reef “without a doubt the most legit Tiki Bar in the Tacoma area,” applauding not just the quality of drinks but the warm, engaging bartenders and carefully curated ambiance.
Though some guests note the atmosphere could be fine-tuned — with JW mentioning the brightness and volume levels as slightly off — the overall consensus is that Devil's Reef is a rare find where passion for tiki culture shines through in every detail, from the décor to the meticulously hand-crafted cocktails.
If you crave a genuine escape filled with rich flavors, innovative drinks, and a touch of pirate-inspired mystique, Devil’s Reef beckons with open arms. It’s the kind of place that invites you to slow down, savor every sip, and drift away on waves of expertly mixed rum and island magic.
Nice dark tiki bar! Hidden off a side street in downtown. No sign out front, just a ships well to let you know you got to the right place! Dark and cozy inside. Great selection of drinks! We tried Obeds grog and the death never dies! Both were good and had a bit of a punch! Worth stopping if you like tiki!
This place is amazing! A very fun and cozy tiki bar in an old historic area of Tacoma. I had the best drink that I've ever had, it's called the Gilman House Special and it was so delicious that I can't wait to go back for another one. We also tried different grog drinks that were amazing too. For our food we shared nachos and ordered pork sliders, rice bowl and quesadilla. Everything was delicious. It was a very fun night!
Incredible and imaginative libations abound on this robust tiki menu! I only had the pleasure of one cocktail but it was one of the best mai tais I've had in a long time. I definitely want to come back and try some food and peruse the menu a bit more. Three cheers for Steve the Pirate! Olympic Otter
Thought this place would be slightly more fun. Great drinks with attention to detail. Nice tiki decoration but too bright, music too quiet… just not quite right. Bartenders semi-friendly/ semi-unfriendly. Worth a try.
Devil’s Reef is without a doubt the most legit Tiki Bar in the Tacoma area. With wonderfully friendly bartenders, an amazing ambience, and a drink list as long as the Bible itself, it’s everything you want from a Tiki space. Of course, none of that matters if the drinks aren’t good. But they most certainly are. You won’t find a single pre-mixed, sugary cocktail on this menu. Everything is a classic or modern take on Tiki with fresh squeezed fruit elements and an absolutely insane selection of rum. If there was a single criticism I have for Devil’s Reef, it would be the food. It’s not bad, but it’s very much average bar food with nothing really standing out as great. I’d probably eat at a different restaurant and then come here for a drink. Or two. Or three.
Visited here this past weekend. Very popular spot, but their waiting list system works well. A wide variety of drinks with some creative names. Top-level theming. The only way it would be better is if they would add some more dramatic flair to their drinks (eg: fancier classes/mugs, special effects like fire, smoke, etc).
If you're in the area of Tacoma, Washington, definitely stop by Devil's Reef. It's on my list of one of the better tiki bars around the country. The look of the bar is pleasing to the eye. Upon entry, you lose yourself to the escapism created by the interior. The staff is amazing and very knowledgeable. Fresh ingredients are prepared in-house, and the bartenders are several steps above the average. The drinks are well balanced and delicious. Food items are offered and make a proper meal, plus they pair well with the cocktails. Definitely stop by this spot and enjoy great ambiance, good people as well as food and drink. It does not disappoint. Tiki peeps, you'll definitely want to make this a destination. However, all will enjoy!
Drinks were decent, although not sure why my requiem for a Doomed Star tasted like licorice when that's not an ingredient. My wife's Kingsport Festival was good. Air flow is a bit of an issue so it was stuffy. Edit - Just want to point out that nowhere in the drinks menu description does it say Absinthe.
